Reunion 2011

Portland was chosen as the city to have the reunion in, and 2011 as the year to hold the next reunion, as that place and that time mark the 45th anniversary of where and when the process of recommissioning the ships began.  It is hoped with this much advance notice, each shipmate will take whatever steps are needed to attend the reunion.

Location:  Embassy Suites, Portland International Airport, Portland, OR

George Lyngheim who served aboard the USS Park County (LST-1077) and his wife, CJ, have put together the following package of information for us at this time.  Additional information will be added as plans are confirmed.

The Embassy Suites is located at the Portland International Airport with shuttle service available to and from the hotel.  This hotel is located near the 800,000 sq. ft. Cascade Station Shopping Centre; and, it is within 1 block of the MAX Light Rail system which provides easy access to and from greater downtown Portland and its metro areas at minimal cost.  You may use the rail system to visit such places as the Japanese Gardens, the Portland Rose Garden, the Living Viet Nam Memorial, the Portland Seawall, the Portland Zoo, the Oregon Forestry Center, the waterfront promenade and much more.  Following is the home page for the TriMet Public Transportation system in Portland:   TriMet Transportation

The room rates at the Embassy Suites have been negotiated down to $109.00 per night plus a 12.5% ($13.63) service fee.  There is no additional sales tax involved.  All rooms are 2-room suites with your choice of a king bed or 2 double beds.  Each suite also includes a microwave, 2 TVs, refrigerator and coffee maker as well as a pull out sleeper couch.  For those who make room reservations at this hotel, a complete cook-to-order breakfast will be available as well as a complimentary evening reception with snacks, beer, and wine.   A notice will be posted when the Embassy Suites is able to begin accepting reservations.

For those who care to participate on Thursday, July 14th, arrangements are being made with the City of Portland Travel and Tourism Office to offer day long tours to include either the Northern Oregon Coast, the Columbia River Gorge Waterfalls and Mt. Hood, a wine tour of the Oregon countryside, Portland’s  microbreweries, the Lewis & Clark Lower Columbia Tour, and others to be considered.

For those who will be staying over on Sunday, July 17th, a brunch excursion on the century old Mt. Hood Railroad will be scheduled.  This trip will include a wonderful Sunday brunch and a scenic and breath taking train ride at the base of Mt. Hood.

George and CJ will take each of the mentioned tours prior to finalizing them as part of the reunion plans.  Also, menus and programs for the Friday and Saturday evening banquets are in the planning stages at this time.  If you have any ideas or suggestions, please send them along using the Contact Us link at the top of each web site page and they will be forwarded to George and CJ.  As updates are available and plans finalized, they will be posted to this web site so please check back regularly.

Ship's Yearbook

It has been suggested by both Bob Flynn and Tom Hankins that we put together a reunion yearbook with information about as many shipmates as possible.  To that end, I have found a web site from which I was able to  develope a form that each person can use to submit information.  However, you cannot attach photos to the form as the web site this form is produced thru charges a hefty monthly fee for downloading capability.  Should you wish to have one or more photos included with your entry, there is a place for you to indicate that on the form.

Any, and all, entries are gladly accepted from this time forward.
